Really, really tough one today.  This team will string some wins together at some point.  Go Dawgs.

DAWGs lose by 4, 86-82.

Another blown opportunity for a win, just like the last game at Samford. Team shoots 50% from the field, but only 28.6% (8 for 28) from 3, while WCU shoots 44.1% (15 of 34) from 3 and we still had a chance to win, but we only made 6 of 15 FTs for 40%, while WCU made 13 of 20 FTs for 65%.  That's your ball game right there.  Make our FTs, and we win, even with WCU outscoring us by 21 points from 3.

Good teams know how/find a way to win;  Bad teams find a way to lose.  We didn't win, so enough said.

Coaches are hired/fired/retained based on their Win/Loss record.  After 4 years, Baucom has not shown steady improvement (SOCON Ws/Ls), and is not off to a good start (W/Ls) this year.

Guts, playing hard, enthusiasm, character of the players are all great attributes, but those are not translating to results on the court, and that is what Baucom was hired to do - WIN.

If he is given another year, then it needs to be an incentive laden contract:

 Offer him a base salary of just $50k per year;

He gets and extra $3K for every player with eligibility that returns for the 2020-21 season;

He gets and extra $5K for every player that ends the 2020-21 academic year with a GPA of 3.5 or higher, and $2K for those with a GPA of 3.0-3.49;

He gets and extra $1K for every D-1 win (games against teams like Atlanta Christian, Carver, and Piedmont dont' count) and $5K for every SOCON regular season win.  Post season incentives remain at whatever they are now.

If everyone with eligibility returns, all the players have a 3.5 GPA or higher, and he goes undefeated in SOCON play, he could easily make over $225K.

I was at the game, was very impressed by the effort.  Everyone played hard and we had a great game plan.  We scored more inside for be so undersize than I can every remember.  Second half had nice clean looks and could not hit a three or foul shots.  If foul shots had fallen we would have won the game.
Harris grandmother died and the funeral was today in Atlanta.  If he or Brown could have played we would have won in my humble opinion.  We couldn't get a break with two best players on the team on available.  We had 4 players on the bench hurt and Harris in another state.  This team will beat some people that don't expect it out of us, just hope it is soon.

I appreciate the effort and everything else that makes these kids great representatives of The Citadel, but after 4 years of sub .500 seasons under Baucom, and the disaster that was Chucky D, all I care about now is "Ws".

Who is injured, and unable to play other than Brown, Higgins, & Gammons?  I know about Brown's hip, but what's up with Higgins and Gammons?

Last nights performance gave me a great deal of hope.  4 freshmen heavily contributing.  Clack and Spence, while under weight for the league, stepped and played well.  Abee and Fitzbibbons are solid.  We lose Batiste, Davis, and Harris this year.  Based on what I saw last night, we have some talent that is getting developed.

Harris not being in the line up due to a death in his family was a huge difference in this game.

We were short staffed and hung in there.  We will be short staffed for the rest of the season for what we thought we would have.

I know all teams have to deal with injuries but if our starting five could have consistently been Batiste, Kern, Rice, Brown, and Harris with Davis, Reid, Higgins, Webster, and the 5 Freshmen coming off the bench, really believe this team could be 10-4?? I know, injuries are part of the game and it's a results based business.

You can never say we'd have been better without the injuries.  We'll never know. And that's what I've been saying - injuries are part of the game and this, like all jobs, is a results based business.

If the team had shown improvment each year from from 2015/16 - 2018/19, then I would say this year is an anomoly with all of the injuries (which we did not have in the previous 4 years).

Unfortunately, that was not the case and last year the record in league play was just as bad as 2015/16.  Doesn't matter how much better overall or the other teams in the league were.

I'll bite.

I'll go ahead and say we'd have been better without the injuries.  No question.  Why?  Well, Hayden Brown looked like a first team All SoCon level dude before getting injured.  He's an inside/outside threat (our spacing is even better with him as a small 5 than with Davis), he can hold defensive position on the low block against taller players, and he's a wizard in the back of our press in 2-on-1 situations.  How many charges does that kid take?

Kern spaces the floor and would give us another weapon who could manufacture his own points from the FT line.  The contested looks that Abee sometimes hits now?  Imagine if those were wide open looks.

Also, sure we didn't have these numbers of injuries in the last four years.  BUT we did lose the SoCon frosh of the year to transfer, lost Balogun to transfer (a kid who went for like 20 and 15 against Furman that year), and have to deal with The Citadel type issues constantly (e.g., Lou not playing in SoCon tournament last year and K. Harris missing a tourney game over some demerit issue).

Is UNC as good this year without Cole Anthony???

Every year is a different excuse.  One year it's " we're young" or "so and so left and transferred", or "think how good we'd be be if so and so had stayed". This year it's injuries; Last year it was "Stallworth didn't play in the tourney game";

I know we don't bring in 5 or 6 JUCO or D-1 transfers every year like ETSU, and every school, not just us, deals with the transfer issue.

Seems when we bring it 5-6 as freshman, we only have 1 or 2 left after 3-4 years.  Look at this years senior class .  Started with 6 and only Harris is left. Same with the Junior class - started with 6 and only Rice, Reed, and Webster are left.

Have to do a better job of identifying kids that fit our school and will stay, 'cause we can't bring in 5 or 6 JUCO or D-1 transfers every year like ETSU.

I have always said that basketball is the most difficult sport to recruit. There are 350 D1 basketball schools most of which do not wear uniforms or march. The transfer portal makes it even easier for kid to bail on any program. I not saying we quit trying to win, this is not going to be easy to fix.
