Big game for the DAWGS as they welcome the Kitty Kats to McAlister today.

At 1-3 in the SOCON, need to right this ship, starting today w/ a big "W".  I'm not talking a 1 - 5 point win, but 15+.

There are 14 SOCON games left. Need to go 8-6 in those games just to be @ .500 in the league.

5 of those are against the top 4 teams in the SOCON - Vermin, ETSU, Woffy, & UNCG.  Based on the results of the last 3 games, I'm not very confident that we can win any of those. That's 5 loses right there. Fortunately, only 2 of those are on the road, but after the ETSU game, not sure playing in McAlister is an advantage.  Would be nice to steal 1 or 2 of these.

That means the DAWGs need to take care of business against VMI, Sammy, Mercer, Chatty & WCU - starting today!  We play each one of them twice.  Can only afford 1 loss to these teams if we want to finish the SOCON at .500 or better.

Not a good start for the DAWGs.  Down 6 - 2 @ the under 16 TO & they already have 3 turnovers.  Frierson 0 for 2 on 3 pt attempts after going 0 for 5 vs ETSU on Thursday.

DAWGs down by 15, 22 - 7 @ the under 12 TO.  Shooting is atrocious!!  Can't hit the broad side of a barn.

DAWGs still down by 15, 31 - 16 @ the under 8 TO.  Shooting is still atrocious!!  No one can hit a 3, DAWGs 0 for 14 &  Frierson now 0 for 7.

DAWGs down by 13, 35 - 22 @ the under 4 TO.  WCU committing a lot of TOs (9) & fouls (DAWGs have been in the bonus since the 13 minutes mark), but the atrocious shooting is killing the DAWGs!

DAWGs finally make a 3 (Najdawi) w/ 1 minute left in the 1st half.  DAWGs shot an unbelievable 1 for 19 on 3 pt attempts in the 1st half, and trail by 12, 47 - 35 at the intermission.

This has to be the worst half of shooting in Citadel basketball history!!!  Stallworth w/ 15 points.  Where would this team be without him!?!!?!?!?!??!

DAWGs come out on fire in the 2nd half & cut the deficit to 4, 52-48 @ the under 16 TO.  Kern hit the DAWGs 2nd 3 of the game & full court pressure is bothering WCU.  Causing lots of turnovers, but DAWGs need to turn them in to points.

Keep up the pressure, knock down some shots & should be able to win this game!

Back  to the cold shooting as the DAWGs are now down by 13, 63 - 50 @ the under 12 TO.  Frierson still can not buy a bucket.

DAWGs down by 15, 74-59 w/ 8:03 left in the game.  Shooting 13.3% from 3 (4 for 30).

WCU w/ 20 turnovers.  You'd think the DAWGs would be winning this game by 20+ by forcing that many TOs.

Has to be the worst shooting game in Citadel history.

Frierson now 0 for 11.  He has made 2 three pointers, by they were waved off because of fouls away from the ball.

DAWGs still down by double digits, 13 points, 85 - 72, with 3:14 left in the game.

Gulp . . . . 6-43 on 3's.  43 attempted 3's.  Even if we hit only 12 or so we would have won this game.  Puzzling.  It seems to be in the players heads now (except Stallworth who had a 30+ game - can't do it by himself)

Another disaster at home by the DAWGs as they lose by 12, 94 - 82 at home to one of the worst teams in the league!!!!

DAWGS shoot a paltry 35.4% (28 of 79) for the game while WCU shoots 53.4%.  DAWGS shoot an abysmal 14% (6 for 43) from 3, while WCU shoots 41.4% (12 for 29) from 3.

Only bright spots were Stallworth, Najdawi, & Brown with 32, 20, & 16 points respectively.  Everyone else stunk up the joint.

What started out as a promising season has quickly gone south, just 5 games in to conference play, as the DAWGs are 0-4 in the SOCON in 2019.

Hate to say it, but this season is already lost.  Can you say tourney play in game?!?!?!?!?

This is not being negative, just stating the facts - and the obvious.

And if I'm wrong, and this team does turn things around, finishes above .500 in the SOCON and makes some noise in the tourney, please feel free to bring up this post and throw it in my face.  I'll take my lumps & bashing.

6-43 from deep yesterday was an outlier, just as the unfathomable shooting prowess we showed early on against High Point.

These things average out.

To me, it's all about realistic expectations for the program at this point.  They have shown progress in the SoCon standings every year under DB thus far and I still believe Year 4 will have us trending in the right direction when all is said and done.  For that to happen, a 'first round' bye in the conference tournament is in order.

Can we finish in the top 6 of the league standings?  YES!

As of today...
6.  WCU (2-4)
7.  Samford (1-4)
7.  Citadel (1-4)
7.  Mercer (1-4)
10.  VMI (0-5)

I think a combined record of 5-3 against WCU, Samford, Mercer, and VMI will get us there.  6-2 would be great, but 5-3 is more realistic.  As of now we're 1-1 with a home win over Mercer and yesterday's game.  Stealing a game from here and there from the current SoCon Top 5 is certainly not out of the question either.

Remaining 6 Games We Need Most: (need to go 4-2 at the worst)
1/17 (Thur) at Samford
1/26 (Sat)   vs VMI -- Pack the Mac -- biggest game of the year
2/9   (Sat)   at Mercer
2/16 (Sat)   at WCU
2/23 (Sat)   vs Samford
3/2   (Sat)   at VMI

Starts on Thursday!  Go DAWGS!

Yes, it's not just our 3 point shooting, but we need to defend the opponents 3 point shooting better. In the non-conference wins vs JMU & S. Florida we held them to 30% or less 3 point shooting while we shot over 30% from 3.  That's the formula for success.

The magic number is we shoot over 35% from 3 & hold the opponent to under 30%.  Do that and we win most of the time.
