I met him in DC when the band came up for the Inauguration Parade. Seemed like a pretty nice guy. Didn't know he was a poker player, though!

I've never met the man, I'm sure he's a nice guy and competent Band director, and good for him at the WSP - BUT - I have an issue with him that after 60 years of having the Pipe Band in the front of the Regimental Band formation during parades, HE decided it would be better for the Pipe Band to be interspered with the rest of the Band instead of as a separate entity.

I understand the "musical" rationale for mixing the Pipe Band in to the rest of the formation, but how come for the past 60+ years numerous Band Directors prior to the LTC (ret.) Smith did not have a problem with the Pipe Band out front? Does he know more or is smarter than them?

While the Regimental Pipe Band is part of the entire Regimental Band Company, it is and should stand out as a separate subset. It is listed separately from the Regimental Band on the official Citadel.edu web page:

"While the Regimental Band and Pipes functions as a single cadet company at The Citadel, it has two parts - the Regimental Band and The Citadel Pipe Band."

My thoughts he is the band director and it is his decision.   Some may disagree but he gets paid for making these decisions.  It would have been much easier to not change anything he must feel it is important and the better way to do it.  I certainly am not enough of a musical expert to argue about it but since he has over 20 years of experience in will tend to go along with his decision.
