Anyone see that on video that comment on that call? It looked like to me it was too late for him to pull out of his tackle. Didn't look that aggressive either.

The field judge on the call was Gary Wiley, never heard of him.

Late hit because of the stupid slide rule. Not targeting because he more or less just rolled over him. Must sit out first half against VMI.

I saw it.  Looked like he was going for the tackle when the guy slide, then rolled over the top of him and their face masks touched.  Even the Samford announcers said there wasn't much there, but letter of the law the refs called it for the head on head hit (touch?).  They mentioned that it certainly didn't look like he was intentionally trying to spear him. Total accidental contact to the helmet appeared to me.

I think the NCAA should look at the slide rule and change it.

Example:
Any feet first slide should be at least 3 yards from the opposing player or contact is acceptable and the angle of the tackle is not a factor.
STF would have hit that dude at the waist if the qb slider had stayed upright and not have slid

How can a player hold up forward momentum less than 3 yards out and change the angle of his body or head? It's not an equitable equation.
Just rule this slide thing not unlike a fair catch.

"Hey QB I'm running at you full speed and I have to guess whether you're going to slide, or go for extra yardage and run past me. And, within a gnat'sass I have to change every angle of pursuit and angle of my body and head to avoid hitting you because you made the decision to slide 3 feet in front of me."

even the TV commentators said it was a bad call.  Everybody knows you cant lead with your helmet and if its done deliberately there is no excuse, if its unintentional at least don't eject the player and make it a lesser penalty.

This penalty probably cost us the game. We needed STF aggressive play. We lost be a couple of plays. He would have made them
