Travel costs killed the MEAC and will kill the Colonial.  We can combine 2 conferences and create 2 separate solid travel divisions.

MEAC is falling apart, Big South grabbed 2 of the 3 best academic schools from the MEAC, and then the SWAC took the 2 Florida schools.
Best football schools in the MEAC-    FAMU-SCST-NCAT...just me...

If the SoCon merged with the Big South which Furman and Wofford would never allow, because they are so arrogant about their academics....And if we could deal with playing CSU home and home, every year.....

The SoCon would be stacked for the FCS

SoCon BigNorth
VMI
Hampton
NCAT
Campbell
Gardner Webb
Western Carolina
ETSU

SoCon BigSouth
Samford
Mercer
UT-Chatt
Wofford
Furman
Charleston Southern
The Citadel

The left overs include....

Big South Associate Members that fit the footprint...
Kennesaw State
Northern Alabama

MEAC in the footprint...
NCCentral
SCST
Norfolk St

Isolated associates of the Big South - Monmouth/Robert Morris

Isolate MEAC outside the footprint
Howard-Excellent Academics
Morgan State
Delaware State

The Supersized Conference that College of Charleston, Elon, Richmond and William and Mary will hate...and then admire when JMU makes the jump and Delaware splits for greener pastures.

SoCon BigNorth

VMI
Hampton
NCAT
Campbell
Gardner Webb
Western Carolina
ETSU
NCCentral
Norfolk St

SoCon BigSouth
Samford
Mercer
UT-Chatt
Wofford
Furman
Charleston Southern
The Citadel
SCST
Kennesaw State

Huh????  Please explain this statement.  What FACTS do you have to back up that statement, because I don't see any correlation at all.

The movie "Glory" came out in 1989;  We have won 3 SOCON Titles since then, and basically our on field performance in the last 30 years has been on par with decades prior to that.

Like I wrote over on the name change thread, if I was recruitting against The Citadel I would know the history of the 2nd Battle of Fort Wagner.

What is your expertise? Why the anger? Quit telling grads to get off your grass.

I coached football at the Citadel when the movie came out. I recruited players as a player or coach from 1981 till 1993. I was on the front lines recruiting and retaining recruits. As the football coach assigned to academics and admissions, we graduated over 90% of our walkons and scholarship players- #2 to Duke- USA Today (both 92 and 93)

We were winning on the field and in the classroom while you were drinking Buds, waving your flag and whistling Dixie.
I have coached scouted for HS, College, Pro. I have helped our team ever since I left. I work on the pro level today. Who Is arbiter of truth? IDK but we won at The Citadel despite historical facts, because we embraced Citadel structure and the Citadel benefits. We lost more recruits than we won, but if we got them here, then they graduated.
When I worked here, our greatest resource with recruits facing negative recruiting was our players, Colonel Dick, Col. Bebansee, General Grimsley and Marty Long.

I understand where you're coming from on the stadium name, but I can't get behind your conference affiliations...

However, everything is probably going to be turned upside down anyway, and when the dust settles from COVID-19 (and let's just hope that it settles sooner rather than never), there are going to be some very different league setups out there -- in part because FCS will be a smaller subdivision. We're going to lose some teams.

The one thing I feel very confident will not happen in your above scenario, by the way, is Samford being the lone Alabama institution playing in a league with five South Carolina schools.

The merger offends too many parties to ever happen.

The SoCon likes the rise of Furmam/Wofford and have not stopped with the defections, more May follow. Our next change might be UTC and an academic school. />Samford, Furman, Wofford, are private with huge endowments and they have different interests than The Citadel. We have seen William and Mary, Richmond left for academics,

We saw the academics at Davidson, George Washington, Wash and Lee as they deemphasized football.

UTC / ETSU are on the other side of some nasty winter highways.
UTC people are pushing for the OVC. Stay on the other side of the Smokies with 4 TN schools and they love their rivalry with Jax St. Bus travel is key.

JMU, NCAT, and Liberty will reach for the Sunbelt.

The SoCon has no plan for chaos. The MEAC and Big South hired consultants to recruit/ keep their members. The Big South acted, the MEAC failed.

The MEAC has lost 5 members- Hampton, NCAT, Florida A&M, Bethune-Cookman, Savannah State in the past 2 years. We lost Elon,App, Gasux, and the basketball associate members and added old members VMI, ETSU, and Mercer, lost some Good football programs, maybe Mercer will rise like Wofford in football?

After Covid the deemphasis of football or the rearrangement of leagues for savings is real. I don’t think that we have the leadership at the SoCon to navigate and we need that leadership now. Does the SoCon have a plan? If we get ambushed and we lose an academic school after Covid allows academics to kill sports. A surprise plus malcontent UTC fleeez, then what? Who fits our footprint?

Monmouth, Stetson, North Alabama, Robert Morris, No! Raid the best of the Big South... Merger-no-but. If we see big big changes like multiple schools deemphasize or drop football, then merger might be a last resort.

Before Covid it was PC, Savannah St. and Jacksonville University and more will follow after this mess.

I would be okay with the "Super Conference" idea... however, no way UTC should be in the south. Maybe swap them and GW/A&T

I just watched the movie "Glory" and am still having trouble with the connection between that movie and our recruiting in FB because of the name of our stadium.

There is no mention of Gen Hagood in the movie and him having anything to do with the battle or COL Shaw's burial.  You have to do some research on the internet (which didn't exist 30 years ago) just to find out where Morris Island is and Ft. Wagner was located.  It's pretty easy now, but not 30 years ago.

STP,
Sounds like you're a bit angry yourself it would seem.  From both sides of the coin, not directed at you, but across, but across the site at all, just because somebody has a different opinion doesn't mean they are wrong.  Opinions are still allowed.

Hey, I just don't see the correlation between the movie "Glory" in 1989 and recruiting for Citadel FB, so please explain it to me, that's all.

FU had stuff from newspapers, the LOD, and Glory became part of their recruiting.Furman coaches shared their Anti-Citadel stuff after Taaffe started having success.

We have had racial incidents at The Citadel. They are well documented. The movie Glory was popular, outside of Shaw, all names were fictionalized.

Read reviews of the movie in historical magazines - it is there.

Furman used an article a movie commentary. Wofford got one later, too.

/>
Our response: See Richard Furman- founder, his writings - Expo of Baptist Views of the Bible supporting slavery in 1822.

The race issue is ugly- it is bad to roll in the mud with Furman, but we could not walk away.

Carry on.
