If they can eliminate bad stretches, they can be successful in SOCON, which continues to be a really tough Conference top to bottom, more so than it was years ago. Played ETSU even aside from bad 5 to 8 minute stretch after Brown went out.

Yes, but 3 of those wins were "guarantee wins" against lower division Brevard, Carver, and Piedmont.

We've seen this script before where the early non-conference record is padded with wins against lower division teams (see 2018-2019 season), and then we get smoked in the SOCON.

"If they can eliminate bad stretches, they can be successful in SOCON"

We say that every year, and it only happens in a handful of games.

Name 1 "signature" win (Power 5, top 25) that our basketball team has had in the last 20 years.

I'm not holding my breath.

In your opinion 81Dawg, how many wins would it take to retain Coaching Staff?? 15-14 going into Conference Tourney? Would 14- 15 cut it? Keeping in mind, we've had what, two 20 win seasons in our HISTORY?

I'd say Baucom needs to finish .500 in SOCON REGULAR season play (9-9) to have any shot of getting another year added to his contract.  That would be an overall record of 15-14 (Only play 29 REGULAR season games) - BUT 3 of those 15 wins would be against NON D1 OPPONENTS. 8-10 in the SOCON regular season won't cut it.

Don't need a 20 win season - just finish in the top half of the SOCON (9-9 or better).  Our expectations are pretty low.

I say given the loss of Brown and the very young team a .500 record would actually be a decent season and might get Baucom a 1 year extension; we have the talent to consistently win 16-18 games a year so settling for 10-12 isn't acceptable.  If you expect mediocrity that is exactly what you will get.

You know, as much as I hate to say it, I think mediocrity is exactly what we expect. As a matter of fact, even 81, our resident glass half emptier (not knocking you for that 81) said 9-9 in conference is the expectation. When you’ve had 2 20 win seasons and are one of the forgotten five of the NCAA Tournament... mediocrity is darn near impressive.

Of course I want the Dogs to win 25 games a season. But history, and the schools military setting, say those seasons just ain’t happening.

I’m not opining on whether or not Baucom does/should get another season. But the guy did get another military school awful darn close to the tournament. It wasn’t unreasonable to think he might duplicate that here. Traditionally we DON’T get successful coaches. We get hungry assistants or guys who were head coaches at a lower level, and hope that maybe we strike gold. Historically, we rarely do. Let’s not kid ourselves about who we are or that assistants from SEC schools and the like are barking up the tree to be our head coach should the AD try to make a change.

I'm not sure what number he needs to hit ... Brown is out, Kern (was supposed to return) has a career ending injury, and some subs that play a good bit are out as well ... These factors don't bode well with the veteran teams in the SoCon ...

Thinking .500 is the thing that keeps the coach is not a good mark.  We have finished .500 or better 10 times since 1960.  In 70 years of basketball in the SoCon we have finish ... 14% of the time.  May be you could say we are due for a good year ... but the one time we found a coach that helped us, he didn't stay long enough to have an impact other than bring awareness to the alumni up that it is possible to win, but not show us anyone can/will do it for sustained time periods.  I'm not knocking Conroy.  His last two years were fun, but now after ten years removed ...   Admittedly, our illustrious AD during that time hired a dud that ruined what Conroy may have started ...

I would rather judge the program on other factors.  We have some young talent in the program.  Coaching has been different this year (subtle things like demeanor on the side line ... which I would say is more positive).  and to the stats ... I feel like we have been in more games in the last two years than we were 3-6 years ago.  Quick looking at other stats, we have some improvement.

To any question about Baucom's employment, I would like to know who wants the job.  Unless it is a DII/DIII winner looking to move up or a big time D1 assistant at a winner, I say we stay where we are.  Frankly, I don't trust the current AD.  He was ran out of UNCW and his track record hiring coaches at UNCW resembles Larry Leckonby's hiring busts here.  ... we may be in trouble during the next set of HC hires.

Conner Kern's career ending injury was devastating, more than most might think. He would have been a solid veteran presence this year! Couple that with Brown and Gammons being out better part of year so far and 6-6 doesn't seem so bad. Yes, I realize we had 3 gimme games but so did most SOCON teams. I feel this year's team plays better defense than any of the past Baucom teams?? Hopefully, we can be more consistent on both sides of the ball in conference play , starting today in Alabama! Hopefully, all five freshmen will stay, Spence and Clark have tremendous upsides once they put on weight. Pair those five with current Juniors, pick up a couple Grad Additions like last two years and next year looks promising. Already have two freshmen committed, one kid out of Ohio who is 6'9 and a 6'2 PG out of Florida. That would give us three kids 6'8 or taller. Will those freshmen still come if current Coaching Staff not retained? Will current freshmen stay?

The PG out of Florida was just named MVP of his holiday tournament and lit it up.
