That may be true, but if as quoted from Jeff Hartsell's article: "A school spokesman said Stallworth apparently was not flagged as an athlete in The Citadel's system as he should have been," then SOMEONE F'd UP and is responsible!

Hopefully someone tells the truth. The school, coaches, admins and compliance did zero wrong.

So, he was going to drop the class anyway, right? He just wanted to wait until the game was over, so he was scamming the system. The drop form was turned in a few hours early. And why does his record need to be flagged as an athlete? Why would that classification have any bearing at all? When we hire mercenaries, don't get whacked out of shape when the act like mercenaries. Although he was the best player we had this year, the outcome of that game would not have been different. Glad the younger kid got to fill in and get experience.

Thank you. The focus should be on the young men that are here for the right reasons and value the education and the opportunities. The Citadel isn’t a place that should be used.

Just got back to the tourney:

Furman ran the same offense last night as we do. 4 out and 1 in the paint, Rafferty. They run 2 kids who can run the point, Hunter and Lyons. Frierson has a hard time at the point. Their two Forwards are athletic, and Gurley will move to the center spot next year. They shoot like Wofford, very well.

My take on Sweet Lew. He knows what he was doing. He knows he had to have 9 hours to stay eligible. He was told he could drop the class but to do it after the tourney. Based on what I was told he could have turned it in when he did and dated it for 3/12/19. He is a grown man, no one needs to flag him as an athlete. He is probably 23 and we are his 3rd school. He knows the game. Our Pres did the right thing. Our commandant did the right thing last year when our discipline problem had to go to boot camp. Our football coach did the right thing at Western.

The LSU coach that got pinched was at VCU for a year and UTC before that. He used the same model that ETSU is using now. Is anyone skeptical of that business model?

Skuttlebutt at the dippin dots icecream stand is that the Mercer coach is retiring and that they will start anew next year. He had two years on his contract.

The league is full of transfers. Everyone but Furman. Woffy got the Goodwin kid from CofC and he played well.

Wofford versus Greensboro tonight in the finals, I have a problem pulling for either one. If Wofford loses the conference definitely gets two schools in the tourney. However it is hard to pull for UNCG without them having football. To tell you the truth I always forget UNCG is in the conference until about November.

MERCER

Mercer men’s basketball coach Bob Hoffman fired after losing season

Bob Hoffman, head coach of Mercer’s men’s basketball team, was fired on March 11, two days after his team lost to Furman in the Southern Conference Tournament. Hoffman has been head coach since 2008.

Looks like the dippin' dot salesman knew before the AD knew it.

Check out Miller’s salary (UNCG - 301K) vs Young’s (Wofford - 171K) and Duggar’s (180K). Easier to do that when you don’t have to be in on all sports.

I question Young's salary only because I was told he got a big raise from his last tourney trip and the Wofford share of the pie was shared with MY. That's also how they keep him in Sptbg. I was told. I wonder if he is getting some Terrier "foundation" money that doesn't have to be reported on your information?

Has to be something. He’s far and away the best coach in the conference. Small school or not, there’s no way he’s making less than Baucom.

Saw where coach Cal recognizes the conference and said Woffy, ETSU, UNCG and Furman all should have made the dance. This is a good BB conference.

I've been pretty hard on Baucom's run 'n gun, "embrace the pace style" of play, as in 4 years it has not produce results (wins).  That being said:

1.  Our team is probably considerably better than when he got here. Problem is, so are the other teams in the conference, so the results are the same.

2.  When he was at VeeMee and started this "shoot as many 3s as fast as you can" style, teams weren't prepared for it and they couldn't keep up.  His VeeMee teams had more players that could consistently hit the 3 than other teams.  Now, every team has 3 or 4 players than can shoot 40% or better from 3.  I heard this in many of the games during the 1st 2 days of the tournament.

Look at Woffy during the last 7 minutes of their game with Seton Hall.  They made like 4 or 5 3s in a row from 3 different players, and turned a 1 point lead in to a 14 point lead, and won going away.

Disclosure: I was a huge fan of this hire. That being said, Coach’s major problem IMO is he has trouble retaining players. Can’t train and develop them if you can’t retain them. We have high attrition and we’re perpetually young. Our success this year rested on a civilian grad student averaging 20 pts a game and running the offense from his guard position. Cadet seniors (Nadjawi and Freirson) averaged a solid but not spectacular 14 and 12 points respectively. Next year we will return two rising seniors (Harris and Burgess) averaging 2 PPG; four rising juniors with only Rice averaging double figures (11PPG) and only one rising sophomore (current knob Higgins) averaging any points at all......less than 2PPG.

That looks thin enough but if you add in our typical attrition of a couple players per offseason, we may struggle next year. There may already have been a transfer announcement or two....I’m not sure.

Short term: Looks like we need to hit the grad student market again. Not optimal but unfortunately necessary.

Long term: We need better recruit evaluation to find decent players who will stay and earn the ring in addition to becoming better and better BB players.

Give ‘Em Hell Citadel....Go Dogs!
