Congratulations to the Head Coach Brent Thompson. The man knows what he is doing and his success only raises the expectations that we have of him. Not really a sustainable business model.

After yesterday he joins the Mount Rushmore of Citadel Coaching with a BCS scalp in a football era of increasing disparity. The teams represented by their respective Coaching/QB duo of Thompson/Rainey just joined the Company of Taaffe/Douglas and Houston/Allen.

Its time to call your BOV rep tomorrow while the irons are hot and tell them we want something done about football coaching contracts and the visitor side of Johnson Hagood. The misguided idea that we have to win before we rebuild the visitor side when we look like Charleston Southern is rather inverted.

My Sunday morning rant.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe each season a team finishes above .500 (either overall or in the SOCON - not sure which), the HC gets 1 year added on to their contract.

For example: This year will be year #5 for Baucom in his initial 5 year contract.  He has not finished above .500 in his first 4 years, so if we don't finish above .500 this year, his contract will not be renewed & we'll have a new head basketball coach for the 2020-2021 season.

35%, 27%, 39% and finally 40% winning percentages.

Baucom is only 5 games off from matching Conroy’s W% and 6 games from matching Dennis’s record. Baucom also has to deal with the transfer portal that I don’t think all of these other coaches had to deal with, thus making it even harder to keep kids, who in their own minds who think they are the next coming of Lebron James, on campus.

Talked to my BOV rep earlier this week and expressed to him that I don't understand the lack of urgency with:

1. The football coaches' contracts.
2. The lack of a clear plan on the east side stands.

He agreed with me that both of these are a concern and that #1 will be taken care of and #2 there needs to be a fire lit up under some in the The Citadel leadership chain.

We had some more alum join our discussion and it appears, from piecing together many conversations, that right now John Carlisle is leading the charge to build the stands. To tell you how poor the communication is though, some thought the CDF was leading the charge and some thought the Alumni Association was in charge. Looks like the stands are getting kicked down the road to the next SOB.

Call your BOV rep.

It hasn't been the CDF for at least 10 years, just saying.  My understanding is there is a special real estate group which is made up of professional in that area.  They are working on program where they will build commercial real estate in the stands like the Guard is in the west stands.  The rents from this will help pay the cost of the east stand

I was told this wasn’t a viable option and the CFA amd JC jumped in out of pure frustration. This may be a major hurdle for retaining this staff . They will tell you that this makes their job much harder to recruit when the stands look like a  rec league complex compared to the schools we recruit against.

Look what is happening across the street with the West Edge project and you can see the potential demand for some type of rental income complex. We own some very valuable air space and we have decided not to pursue making $ off it ?!  Heck if nothing else let’s build it for self use since Bastion Hall is across the street.  When the town closes and relocates the Gov housing down the road in the next few years this part of town will explode.  The houses around campus are already going for 1 million plus and 1 BR rentals are close to 2K a month!

I was told that the real estate "group" bailed out and that no one has the ball but John Carlisle. How much of all that is true? I don't know. What I do know is that I have not gotten a letter asking me for some money, and to be 100% transparent if it wasn't for Jeff Hartsell I would have not known that they were tearing down the old stands.

Jeff do you know the latest?

New to the board. How would one donate specifically to the stadium fund?

I find it comical that we can’t afford it and yet I have never heard any talk of a stadium campaign ?!

Partner with a developer/builder to incorporate a commercial/residential component into the visitor stands and then lease back the properties to the developer for a fixed period of time after which they are released to the school. With the right sugar on top there should be plenty of developers in the area capable of building us a nice brick and mortar structure that will not deteriorate within 20 years like some other recent structures. Hell it could be nicer than the home stands.

Given the location there is certainly a way to pull this off but it will take some vision.
