Having failed to automatically qualify any wrestlers at the SoCon Tournament, The Citadel will be represented at the NCAA Tournament in Pittsburgh by 197-lb. Sawyer Root .  He received The Citadel's only at-large bid.

This year's 197-lb. weight class is probably the weakest in several years.  Perhaps he has a chance to make some noise.

Good luck to him.

I am afraid wrestling has slowly slipped out of everyone's view. I guess the high point was when Turt when deep at the tournament. I followed the tourney on twitter but never saw if he finished 2nd or 3rd in the SoCon.

I believe he must have finished 2nd to get an at-large bid.  The NCAA generally allocates only one automatic qualifier for each weight class in the SoCon.

Don't forget Odie Delaney.  He finished 7 or 8th & made All-American.

The Citadel has had three All-Americans.  Two were Mongolian.

Root lost his first round match by a 1-0 decision. His opponent was Brunner from Purdue.

Root lost his consolation match by a major decision (14-3) to a wrestler from Navy.  His NCAA tournament is over.
