Posting this in response to the angst over our football team's uniform.

I researched through The Citadel website search and ended up on The Guidon 2010-2011. I had fun going through The Guidon and remembering my former days as a cadet until I finally found the page about school colors. It is on page 159. Here is the link: http://www.citadel.edu/admissions/images/files/pdfs/matriculation/theguidon.pdf

It just says our colors are blue and white but does not denote what kind of blue. There is however a reference to sky blue and what it symbolizes.

I then did a search for baby blue and this is what I found in Wikipedia:

Baby blue in human culture
Gender
  • In Western culture, the color baby blue is often associated with baby boys (and baby pink for baby girls), particularly in clothing and linen and shoes. This is a recent tradition, however, and until the 1940s the convention was exactly the opposite: pink was considered the appropriate color for boys as the more masculine and "decided" while blue was the more delicate and dainty color and therefore appropriate for girls.[8][9][10]

Law enforcement

  • In the late 1960s, New Age philosopher Alan Watts, who lived in Sausalito, a suburb of San Francisco, suggested that police cars be painted baby blue and white instead of black and white. This proposal was implemented in San Francisco in the late 1970s [11] (the police cars of the San Francisco Police Department were repainted the standard black and white in the early 1980s). Watts also suggested that the police should wear baby blue uniforms (this was never implemented by the SFPD, apparently because the police wouldn't stand for it, even though other American locations do use light blue police uniforms). The idea behind using baby blue instead of black or dark blue to symbolize the police was, Watts suggested, that if the police were dressed in baby blue, they would be less likely to commit acts of police brutality.[citation needed]
IMO I do not want to be affiliated with a sodomite, new age guru from San Francisco and his love of pastels nor do I want to be referred to as a baby.

This is a dilemma because our colors have always been referred to as baby blue or sky blue and white. But the darker blue looks more fierce on the football battlefield.

Based on this chart our traditional color does look like sky blue.

Thanks. But where did you get this information?

I know that when I was at ElCid, some said the official color was baby blue and others said it was sky blue. When I researched the issue this morning, the only thing I came up with was in The Guidon. Someone else posted the same info I got from The Guidon but they got their info from the Athletic department.

I think the pantone color is actually 279, although I could be misinterpreting that.  See the graphic standards manual:

I don't remember where I saw it. It was a few years ago, but I remember some official Citadel document making a reference to Columbia Blue, which is 292.

The Football Media Guide has stated Columbia Blue and White in the past. After last night, they'll need to add 2-3 more colors. Anyone know the pantone # for fugly?

Roll with the unis-if what these kids see on ESPN (aka NIKE, Adidas, etc..) with other programs- gets them fired up- I'm in for whatever produces results on the field.

Another reason to adopt dark blue- see this quick vid
