Can we not get any players? Finished last/ninth and behind number 8 by 11 shots per player on average. At least volleyball can be somewhat competitive.

Golf has been completely non-competitive since inception.  Typical finish in SOCON tourney is last place amd about 30 strokes behind the next to last place team.  We're not even close.  Just the facts & the way it is.

It's counter intuitive for us to expect female golfers to consider The Citadel. Let's have sports that would more logically fit a military environment. I would think Crew and Softball make far more sense. Possibly Lacrosse as well.

It was actually worse a few years ago, in terms of how far behind we were even the next-to-last place team in the league. Last year we were actually close to finishing ahead of two of the other squads, but it appears we regressed substantially this season.

Regret getting our Golf Team changed to accommodate Title 9, PC is making far too many changes to our Alma Mater.

What about sailing, C of C has a great program and a sport we could compete in. Softball is a viable option with lots of programs semi-local to compete against. Agreed, golf is hard to recruit.

The ladies' golf program is a complete embarrassment to our school.
Get rid of it!!

How about FENCING as a replacement so we don't have to to lose any men's sports?
FENCING may be less expensive than golf, and it is a "military" sport.

And while we're at it let's add men's FENCING and BOXING teams. But would we have to add ladies' Wrestling?

I heard a rumor (don't know if it is true) that we've been so desperate for women to join our varsity golf team that we've offered varsity scholarships to young girls who not only didn't play HS golf….they didn't know how to play golf before reporting as a scholarship player.  I hope I am wrong on this one.

Surprised we can't get beter players as Charleston has great courses. Furman has put so many players on the LPGA that they are hard to compete against.

Furman has their own golf course, so that gives them a major advantage in any league.

I heard that as well when I was a cadet. When this thread appeared I went and looked at the roster and it seems all of the ladies have played golf before and have experience according to their bios.

Here is the thing. How many ladies are going to want to come to The Citadel play golf? I mean the good ones that will make us competitive. Not very many. That leaves the girls who were okay on the golf team in HS or the girl who was the best on her HS team but grew up in Pickens or Liberty.

Here is our golf coach: http://citadelsports.com/staff.aspx?staff=71&path=wgolf

Sounds like another Ohio native (Wheeling, W Va is a border town) moving south for the weather and golf.

From the Brigadier Foundation website:

OUR STORY

The Brigadier Club funded the first scholarship for a cadet-student-athlete at The Citadel. Its mission was to help provide scholarship monies to a small athletics department in Charleston whose teams had yet to win a champion -ship in any sport. Today, The Citadel Brigadier Foundation, Inc. provides assistance to approximately 225 cadet-student-athletes. Because no state monies are received in the Athletic Department’s budget for scholarship aid, the money raised by The Citadel Brigadier Foundation is critical to the Bulldogs fielding competitive teams throughout the year. When alumni, friends, parents, businesses and you donate to The Citadel Brigadier Foundation, Inc., all contributions are used to provide scholarship aid to the Bulldog teams that are continually challenging for Southern Conference Championships each year.

Which teams are they talking about?  Could not possibly include golf, volleyball, basketball & baseball in that statement.

I give to The Brigadier Foundation to support cadets that play sports and represent my school.  I give if they win or lose because I know that they are true student athletes.  I don't give only if they win.  I want them to win, I attend most football, baseball & basketball games and 99% of the time I am proud of our teams win or lose because I love this place.  I would hope that most on this board also support the Brigadier Foundation.  Withholding support will never help us get better.
Go Dogs!
