Don't know anything about the guy just hoping they take a step back. So much competition in the SOCON.

The big question is does he keep the staff together or bring some of his guys in, it would be nice to break up that staff a little bit.

Best news to me.

look at the Pittsburgh blogs... all are happy to see him go.

that to me speaks volumes.

Pitt was 5-7 this year in his 3rd year on the staff. That staff probably will be gone after next year unless they win 7 games according to most up there.

.....I wonder if he will keep the option offense....if the OC moves on after not being promoted....etc.  Could actually be a good year to be playing Wofford in the season opener.

Understand Conklin will keep all coaches.  He should be successful if he stays out of the way and let the staff continue what they have been doing for decades.  His wife's father and grandfather are Wofford alumnus.

There is a narrative on the "Any Given Saturday" website that indicates Wofford's staff may be getting raided.  From a FU fan:

"....App State DC Nate Woody heading to GT. Scot Sloan, the App State Co-DC/DB coach, has been hired at Georgia Southern. That leaves ASU with a need for a DC, linebackers coach, and DB coach.

Wofford fans are circulating on their site that Greg Gasparato is likely heading to Boone, ostensibly to fill a linebackers coach void left by Woody.
Just makes sense to me that App would also try to pluck Wood, who is a Woody protege, runs the same defense, and can step into their need for a defensive backs coach.
It's the offseason, and I could be wrong, but I suspect that the reason Wofford hired a young defensive-minded head coach is because they are about to lose a some of their defensive staff."

Also, a Wofford fan highlighted that the new HC may not be joined at the hip with the Ayers offense:

"It sounds like we are evolving out of the option. Terriervision posted on youtube an interview with Conklin and he said this about our offense and defense (i'm too lazy to post it but it's easy to find):
1) We are keeping the multiple 50 defense
2) that he's attracted to the option but he wants to open it up to take us to the next level.
To me, that says we're going to move away from the option, because he didn't assert the same amount of certainty behind keeping the option as he did the defense...."

I hope chaos ensues.  It could be our timing is actually optimal to play Wofford in the season opener....(1) New HC....(2) Potentially some new staff....(3) Possibly a first crack at rolling out some new wrinkles from an unproven offense.

Great post NavyDog.  They are nuts to go to a conventional or spread type offense, Wofford is hard academically and that is the reason they ran the option all these years, they could get the athletes to run it.  It if they move away from it, will bode well for us.  We will be the only team in SOCON running the TO.  Hope we're right here.

If we got a new coach and the first thing he said was we are going to potentially change our adherence to the triple option, I would lose my mind. Wofford wins because of the way they play the triple option. Yes they have a good defense but the triple option is their identity. Good for us that indications are the new Wofford head coach might be retarded.

I smell a Bryan VanGorder at Georgia Southern situation brewing.

He’s going to get Wade Lang to change his philosophy as an OC? Ok me and eight four are going to bring out lawn chairs, beer cooler, and popcorn to watch this dumpster fire ignite.

20 yrs of Wofford being in the wilderness would be fine with me, but I think they could actually make the turn...it’s not like they are a military college and they are not a Harvard either.

After talking to Wofford insiders it looks like the Conklin hire also had some inside connections.

Plus, his brother-in-law, Al Clark III, and father-in-law, Al Clark Jr., were four-year Wofford lettermen in 2002 and 1976, respectively.   www.triblive.com

Al Clark Jr. is the right hand man of jimmy Gibbs, if his name rings a bell it is because the football stadium is named after Jimmy and Marcia.

"Richardson got the basketball arena." So it looks like the Gibbs' won out over the Richardsons' influence in this struggle to control Wofford athletics.

Josh married Al's daughter in a fine affair.

Spartanburg Herald must be a little sensitive to this because they have modified their original articles and taken out the Clark paragraph about the hire.

As you can see Todd updated his article and the Clark connection is now gone.

Is Mr Lott right here? Will we be the only TO team in the Conference? Thought Furman was running it now?

You are correct '90, I think they run spread option. Know they throw a good bit more than we do.
