Just talked to a former player and asked him what the problem was with the team.  He said basically this:

SOCON is really strong this year.  Only bad teams are us, VMI, and Mercer.  Will be a fist fight to stay out of last place.

We are too small and have too little depth.

We do not have big man that is presence down low.

The problem is that all the military schools have the same issue and that is getting a big man that can compete at this level to buy into the military aspect of military schools.

Great players make great coaches, not the other way around.  We simply do not have the talent to play against the teams we are competing against night in and night out.  We can change coaches and rearrange the deck chairs but until we get a big man that can compete, it will be same old same old. Coaching at a military college is a tough assignment.

Remember Demetrius Nelson (Meat)...6'8'' 250?  Was a beast and we won 20 plus games.  It is not a difficult equation.

And he is really dissappointed with the lack of interest from anybody.  Attendance is pathetic, but that comes from not winning since 2010.

He is pretty much spot on.

I agree that it is hard to have a good basketball program at a military school, I think that is why we hired Duggar. He had some success at VMI and we thought it would carry over here. Every sport we have is a developmental program that depends on having jrs. and srs. that wait their turn to play after spending two years developing their skills. With all the quitters we have had in basketball it makes it hard to move forward.

I agree.  Spot on except for the "too little depth" part.  How can a team that has 2 Grad transfers, 3 Seniors, 1 Junior, and 3 Sophomores, ALL with extensive experience playing a the D-1 level have "too little depth?

BUT - what about the 3 point shooting?  This team is built on shooting a lot (making) of 3s.  Opponents are making a higher percentage of their 3 point shots than we are, and many nights they take less 3 point shots than us, but make more.

Also, don't forget about all of the JUCO transfers that other teams in the league pick up.  ETSU has 7!

Well, just because we have a junior and a few sophs with playing experience, doesn't mean they can contribute quality minutes against the likes of Furman, Wofford, UNCG, ETSU, etc.
Obviously they can't.  All those players that quit the last two years are killing us now.

I am just telling this board what the former player told me and he knows what he is talking about.

Yes, but we've gone from being one of the youngest D-1 teams last year with "0" Seniors to this year being one of the oldest w/ 5 Seniors/Grad Transfers.

Look at Woffy:  3 Seniors, 3 Juniors, and 5 Sophomores and 5 Freshman!!!!  And they are in 1st place in the SOCON!!!

So the bottom line is lack of talent.  Has nothing to do with experience, depth, style of play, or coaching.  It's simply that our players are not as good as the players on the other teams.  Is that what you are saying?

UNCG game in the 1st half is a complete disaster. Down by 22, 43 - 21. Shooting 31% & only 2 of 12 (16.7%) from 3, while UNCG is shooting 44% & is 7 of 20 (35%) from 3. That’s the issue right there - we can’t make shots! Period!

You’ve said this twice now ... not true ... some good players make good coaches, but not all.

I think everyone on this board is aware of how bad this team is playing. The results are bad. Duggar’s success at VMI (where he didn’t have transfer students) has not translated.

Bottom line ... the school can count on one hand the number of 20 win seasons. There is no faith that we can consistently win under any coach. Therefore, we will likely continue honoring the full contract of the coach and evaluate his performance at the end.

Where is your post going? Nelson was a good player for us. I enjoyed those years. Is he coaching now?

Ed Conroy is an assistant at Minnesota and have no idea what ever became of Nelson.

I think I know the problem with our program and why our players are not performing consistently at a high level on the basketball court:

They are spending to much time on their academics to make sure that they graduate, and not enough time honing their basketball skills.

Those that are, leave the program/school.

But he didn’t stay here. He didn’t prove any long term success or make a big change in Citadel Basketball. He had one really good year and one so-so (the latter good for us). He was a great coach for us for a short period. Definitely proud of him as a fellow alum. Unfortunately we need some one with his abilities that is going to give us a long term commitment.

Gotcha on Nelson, I must have misread your comments, I got the impression you were saying he was the former player that you are relaying messages.

I think we are all frustrated. We have a talent gap for big men. Harris our on injury and Brown before that have been difficult ... with Harris no one is picking up the slack. Last night we missed too many open shots and teams have figured a solution to our “base” play. We need to adjust sooner or start with a different look ...

The Chatty coach summed up what the SoCon coaches are doing. Guard Frierson and Zane and make the other 3 beat you. It ain't happening yet. I am hoping with Brown back and Harris on the way back it can take some pressure off of the other two. Kern has got to start scoring, especially for the minutes he is getting.
