Scholarships for the 3 major sports - Football, Baseball & Basketball (M); Someone explain to my why/ how this works:

1.  In FB, teams get 85 (FBS) or 63 (FCS) scholarships.  Teams have 100+ players (Need 50 - 60), but usually less than 60 ever see the field to play meaningful plays.

2. In Basketball, teams get 13 scholarships.  Teams usually have 11 - 13 players (Need 10 - 11), but usually only 8 - 10 get significant playing time.

3. In baseball, teams ONLY GET 11.7 scholarships, but NEED at least 25 players.

So why does FB get so many more scholarships to give out to players that hardly ever see the field, basketball gets about the same number of scholarships as players needed, BUT baseball gets LESS THAN 1/2 the number needed just to field a team???????

I realize that for almost all D-1 schools, baseball is not a revenue producing sport, while FB & basketball is.  Most D-1 schools, especially @ the FCS (FB) & mid-major (BB), do not actually turn a profit in any sport. If they do, it's just enough to have the athletic department as a whole break even.

Because the NFL, and to a lesser extent the NBA, uses our nations higher education system as their minor leagues. Simple as that.

Baseball doesn't bring in cash.

FB is the goose that lays the golden egg and gets resources to keep the money flowing in.  Plus, there is research that shows FB appeals to alumni across the board, generates interest, school giving, etc.

Basketball at some places, is revenue positive, but not everywhere.
