Another guard transferring. Said on Twitter that The Citadel isn't for everyone. Also saw Frankie Johnson retweet his tweet, and make some others. Appears there was a little more "behind the scenes" drama going on than we've heard about on this board.

Context is important.  Wake Forest has 4 transfers...most of the Pitt roster has requested transfers...800+ D1 basketball transfers last year...33% of all college students transfer at least once in their college careers.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/answer-sheet/wp/2017/01/29/why-so-many-college-students-decide-to-transfer/?utm_term=.4719c14555b8

When a cadet leaves The Citadel, it seems there is always the instinctive assumption that the wrong players were recruited, the system is too tough, etc...We have a really good Coach who gets what The Citadel is about and cares about his players on and off the court.  Our cadets/players are subject to the same pressures and concerns that college students of their age group are nation wide.  We never ask could the players at Wake or Pitt not handle the Wake or Pitt "system."  Most are just college age students/players trying to figure out life and where they fit on and off the court.

I wish all our players and former players the best.  Even without those who are transferring, our roster is full of young me who are worthy of our continued support and investment.  The sky is not falling.

Context to your context is also important- Wake and Pitt were both abysmal this year and clearly had all kinds of issues. If may happen other places, but it’s still not good.

I 100% agree that it's not good, but 18-19 year olds make 18-19 year old decisions at The Citadel and nationwide.

Basketball and football have been much too quiet about their problems; the old school graduates never operated this way. Attack the problem and never let a Citadel Man make the in school misstakes especially after completing his freshman year....big mistake these youngsters are making....that is all.

This is a major problem and needs to be addressed NOW.  This program is never going to get anywhere if we are starting over every year.  What's the deal?

Have any of the players who left us made significant contributions elsewhere?

It is what is it... I wonder if coach saw these kids bailing on him. If not it is almost impossible to fill their spot for next season at this point.

I tend to agree.  I know this is an issue across college basketball.

Does VMI or the Service Academies have the same problem?

Schools like ETSU, UNCG, UTC just replace their transfers with JC or transfers from other programs so they always seem to have 5 or 6 JRs or SRs on the team.

Seems like every year we have 5 or 6 freshmen on the team and never more than 2 - 3 SRs (or like this year, 0 Srs).  Baucom can bring in 1 or 2 grad transfers every now & then, but how has that worked out in the past?

For a school like ours, retention and development is the key.  We don't get the 4 & 5 star recruits, that are 1 & done and then just reload.  Our players have to develop and mature, like Williams, Najdawi and Frierson.

In 2016-17, we started w/ 6 Freshmen;  Now after 2 years, we should be loaded w/ JRs & SRs, but only 2 of those 6 are still left (Allende & Harris). That's only 33% retention.  This year, we also started w/ 6 Freshmen, and so far we are losing 2 of the 6. That means in the last 2 years, 50% of the players that came in have left (6 of the 12).  That's not going to cut it.

If we are ever going to compete for a SOCON Championship and an NCAA bid, we have to do better.  What's the answer????  Any ideas???

So what is the " a little more 'behind the scenes' drama?"

Ezekiel Balogun transferred to a JUCO and played 7.5 minutes per game and averaged 4 points per game. Pretty good average per minutes played but didn't play much.

I say stock probably went down in Ezekiel.

I have read it is 211 Transfers this year so far with more expected. I wrote down the teams that have lost at least 3 this year alone.

Pittsburgh           9
Evansville           8
USC Upsate        5
Dayton               4
N.C State            4
Wake Forrest      4
Youngstown State 4
Maine                 4
Cal Poly              3
Fordham             3
Kent State          3
N.C Central         3
Oral Roberts        3
San Jose State     3

And these kids are not going to a military school. It might not be a problem with the program, it just might be a problem with the millennium kids.

Add The Citadel to this list (Simmons + the 2 Johnsons - Rob & Frankie).  If you include Parks, that makes 4 this year.

At the end of the day, my eyebrow is raised ... Whether they left for good or bad reasons, the bottom line is we are young yet again next year.  We have to recruit better.

I'll tell you guys something else, we only have 9 scholarship players next year plus one incoming freshman makes 10.  Can't win with those numbers, we have to find kids that will stay and play.

DB must have known something because he said after the tournament, we should be really good assuming they all come back and play.
